Deciphering Decisions: MCA Revisited
This training will be delivered to you by Chelle Farnan – NHSE EoE Clinical Lead Safeguarding and Kate Brolly MCA Lead Practitioner at Norfolk & Waveney ICB.
This session takes an in depth look at the 6 phases of a good MCA assessment:
1. Opening - Explain to the person who you are as a professional and that an assessment under the MCA is going to be completed.
2. Preparation - Information gathering (what does the person already know) Information giving (what the professional understands of the situation to help inform the decision-making)
3. Option-listing - What options are available to the person. The research asks professionals to ensure all options are considered at the same time. The study raises the importance of ensuring this is a decision-making process and not one where the professional is seeking consent for their professional opinion.
4. Test - Completing the assessment under the MCA.
5. Decision - What is the person's decision after hearing all the relevant information?
6. Close - What are the future actions? These should be concrete actions e.g. referrals to onward services.
